California's Information Practices Act

California's Information Practices Act

California's Database Security Breach Notification Act (SB 1386) and General Security Standard for Businesses (AB 1950) require state agencies or companies that conduct business in California to implement safety procedures that safeguard data and disclose any breach of security to California residents who are affected.

Personal information includes an individual's name in combination with any one or more of the following data elements:

  • Social security number
  • California identification card number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Medical information
  • Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code or password that permits access to an account

Companies that fail to implement proper data security procedures and/or disclose security breaches can be sued in civil court for damages.

Workshare software helps organizations implement internal controls to protect data and audit information usage by:

  • Stopping out-bound email that contains financial or other sensitive information and alerting users to the violation
  • Enforcing usage policies that control content
  • Enabling companies to define rules for content control and protection and who can override existing policies
  • Providing audit reports of content changes
  • Supporting compliance activities without changing the way your users work
