The UK Freedom of Information Act

The UK Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act (FOI) was passed on 30th November 2000, and became fully implemented in January 2005.

The FOI gives the right to compel any Public body to make available any information they might be holding on any subject they are interested in (there are some exceptions – National Security for example).

Examples of information requests include:

  • Personal records
  • The process for awarding a particular contract and its commercial terms
  • Results of testing of a local water supply
  • An area affected by a toxic spillage
  • An enquiry into the suitability of a particular site as a waste dump

Public authorities are required to maintain accurate and appropriate records; just deleting the records and email to avoid compliance could render the authority in breach.

Workshare software helps organizations implement internal controls to protect data and audit information usage by:

  • Stopping out-bound email that contains financial or other sensitive information and alerting users to the violation
  • Enforcing usage policies that control content
  • Enabling companies to define rules for content control and protection and who can override existing policies
  • Providing audit reports of content changes
  • Supporting compliance activities without changing the way your users work
